"In the Shadow of The Trees" By Mathais P. Harpin and Waite Albro
In the Shadow of the Trees is a book on the history of West Greenwich from
its beginnings in the early 1700s to the present. It is the only history of the town that delves into political,
social and most of all, the personal life of so many of its families.
The well-known author, Mathias P. Harpin, originated the idea some ten or more years ago but did not live to see it
completed. He passed away in 2002 at the age of 91.
With some persuasion Waite Albro, Mat's long time friend,
an author, and best of all, a native of West Greenwich, came to his aid.
Although the authors exhibit different literary styles (Mat's writing is mostly structured and informational, while Waite weaves his stories in an expressive conversational format), the melding of the two has resulted in a book that contains both historical facts and the personal observations that can only be told by one who has been part of the community. The reader is the beneficiary of this collaboration.
In conjunction with the completion of the book the authors sought out, and profitied by, conversations with many of the old-timers. They found them all to be generous with their special recollections, thereby forgoing a link to earlier generations that otherwise would have been lost.
The authors wanted to do justice to the memory of the many people that they have known, and have taken this opportunity to analyze and chronicle events that are important for understanding the history of the town, a community comprising of strong, individualists, idealists, and an intriguing assortment of entrepreneurs, politicians, rogues and rascals.
Glacing at the Index you will find many familiar names, some dating back to the town's early years, followed by the "newcomers" of 60 years or so, and a few prominent Rhode Islanders who, attracted by the relative secusion and peace of the town's woodlands, enjoyed their time there and left their mark.
In the Shadow of the Trees is not a textbook but a history written to read, to enjoy, and then to pass on to those who are curious about what life was like In the Shadow of the Trees.
The book weas sponsored through the generosity of Centreville Bank and is available at its branches.
