September Monthly Meeting 2008

The speaker at our September meeting was Sandra Enos, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Sociology at Bryant University
and her subjecting back to the 1830s,"Orphanages In Rhode Island." Most of us who were in attendance were blown over
by the number of institutions that have come and gone over the years. The earliest orphanages were dating back to the 1830s.

During hard times or family crisis many children were abandoned to the state. Dr. Enos related that, contrary
to popular belief, in many instances children received better care there than what their own families could provide.

Several people in the audience shared their own first hand experiences. In fact, our speaker was surprised to hear the names of a couple of Rhode Island orphanages that were unknown to her.

Dr. Enos wrote Mothering from the Inside: Parenting in a Women's Prison;and produced an audio CD titled
Let us build a Home For Such Children: Stories from the State Home and School.
currently she is completeing a book on the history
of child welfare in Rhode Island and is working on a script for a documentary tracing the 175-year history of Children's Friend and Service.
