The speaker at our September meeting was Colonel Richard Sheryka of the
Kentish Guards. His topic : "The Kentish Guards as a connecting thread through the tapestry of Rhode Island and American History."
A member of the Guards for forty years, he has served in the Guards Band, the Fife and Drum Corps, the Guards Militia,
and a year as the commander of the militia company, thereby earning a commission as a Colonel in the R.I. Militia.
He has written and lectured on the role of the Kentish Guards in the American Revolution, on the chartering of elite militia companies in Rhode Island,
and on the militia system in the U.S. He currently serves as a Liaison Officer, as a fifer in the fife and drum corps,
and as editor of the Kentish Guards newsletter.
A little history of the Kentish Guards:
They were formed on Sept. 24, 1774 to protect the Town of East Greenwich from Tory attack
and were chartered by the Colonial Assembly on October 29, 1774 as an "elite militia" taking extra responsibility for their own training and equipment.
They are still located in East Greenwich.
