The guest speaker at our January meeting was Susan SANFORD who has been with the Haffenreffer Museum in Bristol for 25 years and is presently eduaction specialist to schools and adult groups. She spoke on the history of Mount Hope and the native people of Rhode Island.
The museum originated with the private collection of Rudolf F. Haffenreffer (1874-1954), a first generation German-American industrialist from Fall River, a master-brewer, and the president of Narragansett Brewery.
Mr. Haffenreffer's hobby was collecting Indian artifacts and in the early 20th Century he founded the King Philip Museum, which today houses artifacts from the native peoples of the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. It remains where he built it on Mount Hope Grant in Bristol, which was the former headquarters of Metacom, a 17th Century Wampanoag sachem.
The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, located on 375 acres overlooking Mount Hope Bay, is Brown University's only major museum.
The Museum is open Labor Day to Memorial Day: Saturday and Sunday 11-5.
In June, July and August: Open Tuesday through Sunday 11-5.
Admission: Adults: $3.00, Seniors:$2.00, Children under 12: $1.00.
