Pawtuxet Valley Historian Volume 14, Issue 5
Our speaker for the evening was Ginny Leslie who has spent 14 years in the environmental field. She was employued by D.E.M. for 10 years as a Senior Planner, worked on several open space and recreational projects such as the Blackstone River Linear Park System and the North/South Trail, and is now affiliated with the Pawtuxet River Authority.
Her subject was the North/South Trail which offers hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers miles of fun and challenges in woods and scenic back roads with lots of historical areas and houses along the way. In Rhode Island the Trail was completed about two years ago and comprises about 78 miles from Massachusetts border in Burrillville to Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown and connects eight state-owned wildlife management areas in eight western Rhode Island towns.
Once a year a group of people get together in the spring to hike the entire trail. They cover between 11 and 17 miles a day over six Saturdays with about 75 people in the beginning but with only about 40 completeing the trek. Ms. Leslie's program consisted of slides showing the beauty of the countryside seldom seen by those of us who whizz by in our automobiles.
